Please plan to join the Transcona Trails Association opening event for The Cordite Trail located on the corner of and Ham and Cordite Road at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 5th, 2010.
This trail follows the south bank of the Cordite Ditch, part of a dangerous Cordite Plant operation located to the east of Transcona that played an important part in Canada’s World War II efforts. Alongside this man made ditch, the Cordite Trail is now a place for hiking, cycling and walking your dog. Interpretive signs along the trail will help you learn more about this fascinating story. Look around you for clues of Transcona’s industrial history.
Today the Cordite Ditch provides an ideal environment for marsh birds, hawks and other wildlife. The bulrushes provide shelter for nesting geese and ducks. You might also see deer, rabbit or the occasional fox! Be sure to check out the Cordite Trail East Track, located by Redonda Street in East Transcona to learn more about the explosives manufacturing operation near Transcona in the early 1940s.
